Handsculpting Structures
We crafted this curvy wall at UCR Palm Desert using cob, a natural building material that allows for creative, organic shapes and brings out our inner artist. Join us to learn how to build cost-effective, sustainable structures like garden walls, sheds, animal enclosures, and even healthy, affordable homes using this versatile technique.

Rocks and Rubble For the Base

Mixing Sand, Clay, Straw & Water

Piling on the Cob

Sifting for Plaster

Plastering the Bench

Working Together

A Gathering Place
This garden wall is a magnet for wildlife like lizards who take refuge between the rocks that form the base, birds that perch on top to rest and hunt, and for people to take in the mountain views.

Learn to Build a Useful Structure
We built this Palletable Cobin to demonstrate a small-scale structure that is fast and inexpensive to build. In fact, it could be free to build if all materials were sourced from the land and waste stream. Structures like this can be used for storage, animal shelter, and even non-toxic eco-friendly housing for people.
